As the organized voice for not-for-profit providers of human services in New York, the Human Services Council (HSC) serves as the meeting ground for the leadership of the entire sector while promoting the collective interests of New York’s most vulnerable populations and the agencies that serve them. Our membership of almost 200 agencies includes federations, subsector-specific umbrella associations, advocacy groups, and direct service providers, both large and small, that provide a wide variety of human services from child care and after school programs for children and youth to transportation and meals for seniors, as well as child welfare, health, mental health, homeless, immigration, and substance abuse services. Because of our diversity we are known as “the coalition of coalitions,” “the federation of federations,” and “the voice of the human services community.”

Student Internship Opportunities

Description
HSC seeks students to assist with advocacy, fundraising, research, membership expansion, and other tasks important to our mission. HSC is looking for interns who fall into one of three major categories:

Communications, Membership, and Development Intern
Policy Intern
Website/Information Technology (IT) Intern

These internships are an excellent opportunity for students pursuing a career in communications, development, public administration, public policy, social work, or nonprofit management to gain exposure to the inner workings of the legislative process and will provide the practical experience necessary to develop advocacy, fundraising, organizing, communications, and research skills.

Duties

Assisting the Executive Director and staff with initiatives important to HSC’s mission
Preparing and distributing training and educational materials to our membership on topics such as advocacy and
contracting
Assisting staff with daily tasks, including scheduling meetings, updating spreadsheets, letters and mailings
Researching information about not-for-profit providers and funders in the community
Writing and reviewing pieces for quarterly e-newsletter, website, social media sites, and annual report

Assisting with membership expansion and retention campaigns (Communications, Membership & Development Intern)
Assisting with development activities including grant proposals and reports
(Communications, Membership & Development Intern)
Monitoring City and State budget and legislative activities impacting the human services sector (Policy Intern)
Representing the organization at coalition meetings and public policy briefings (Policy Intern)
Managing and implementing weekly updates to the website (Website/IT Intern)
Maintaining a consistent appearance of the website (Website/IT Intern)
Creating or updating databases (Website/IT Intern)
Responding to information technology needs of the agency (Website/IT Intern)

Qualifications

Previous experience in public policy, advocacy, or social services desired, but not mandatory
Strong written and oral communication skills
Ability to work independently and take initiative
Dependability and attention to detail
Computer and internet savvy
Strong interest in public policy issues, social services, and/or legislative advocacy (Policy Intern)
Strong skills in computer programming, website design, or database management desired (Website/IT Intern)
Previous experience in managing websites and databases is a plus (Website/IT Intern)

Commitment and Duration
HSC is open to part-time internships, especially during the school year. HSC will work with candidates to obtain course credit or through various school/scholarship programs
